Open Source App Goose Could Free WHOOP Users from Paid Subscription

WHOOP fitness trackers are known for their reliance on paid subscriptions, with a minimum annual cost of $199. However, a developer under the alias Bennet has introduced the open source project Goose, which allows users to extract data from the device without needing a subscription.

Currently, Goose is in a preliminary alpha stage and does not claim to be a full replacement for the official service. The app supports only the latest tracker model—WHOOP 5.0—and works exclusively on iOS. Additionally, there is a significant delay in data processing, and functionality is limited to basic features.

Despite these limitations, the project has already proven its viability. The developer emphasized that optimizing the code, porting to Android, and expanding support for older device models will be necessary to turn Goose into a full-fledged alternative. If successful, this could provide a solution for users unwilling to pay for a subscription.

It is worth noting that WHOOP is positioned as a product requiring ongoing payments, but the emergence of such initiatives highlights growing interest in open solutions within the wearable device segment. This may also encourage manufacturers to reconsider their business models.
