Oura Ring 5: The New Benchmark for Smart Rings with Enhanced Design and Sensors

Oura has unveiled the fifth generation of its smart ring, positioning it as a game-changer in the wearables category. The new model is 40% thinner than its predecessor, making it more comfortable for daily wear while retaining all health-monitoring functions. The device is available in six colors, including two new finishes: light gold and deep copper-pink, as well as traditional options like silver, black, and matte.

The Ring 5’s design is both sleeker and more functional. With a thickness of just 2mm and a width of 6mm, it blends seamlessly with jewelry while resisting mechanical stress, including sports activities, and scratches. Early tests confirm the ring doesn’t snag on skin during workouts and remains comfortable for extended wear.

At its core, the fifth-gen ring features updated sensors that Oura claims deliver higher measurement accuracy. While the number of sensor channels has been reduced from 18 to 12, the company asserts that new LEDs and optimized algorithms compensate, improving data quality. The device now better tracks low-intensity activities like Pilates and supports automatic workout recognition. However, early tests show it may still miss some sessions, indicating room for algorithm refinement.

Health monitoring has been expanded with new alerts for potential atrial fibrillation and sleep-related breathing disorders, aiding early diagnosis. The ring continues to track body temperature, heart rate variability, and blood oxygen saturation. Tests confirm high pulse measurement accuracy, with a deviation of just 2 beats per minute under peak loads compared to reference devices.

The Ring 5’s battery life remains consistent with its predecessor, offering 6 to 9 days depending on size—one day longer than the Oura Ring 4. However, competitors like Ultrahuman and Whoop already offer devices with double the battery life, so Oura must focus on extending its runtime.
