Why an iPhone User Switched to Gemini with Android Auto in the Car

A ZDNet author, who uses an iPhone and Siri via CarPlay, decided to evaluate the capabilities of Google Gemini in the car. To do this, they connected an Android smartphone to the multimedia system of a Toyota Camry with Android Auto support and tested Gemini in real-world conditions.

Gemini demonstrated a broad range of functionality: searching for restaurants via Google Maps, creating playlists in YouTube Music, sending messages, and reading emails. The assistant also handles more complex tasks—such as selecting reviews for TV shows (the test used "Spider-Noir" on Amazon Prime*), conducting interactive foreign language lessons, and even playing trivia games.

Compared to Siri and ChatGPT, Gemini proved to be a more versatile tool for the car. The author noted that Google’s assistant adapts better to complex queries and offers interactive scenarios, such as generating stories or engaging in conversations. To activate Gemini, simply say "Hey Google," after which you can issue hands-free commands.

To start using Gemini in the car, you need to install the app on an Android smartphone, set it as the default voice assistant, and connect the device to the multimedia system via USB or Bluetooth. It’s important to note that Gemini is not yet available to all Android Auto users—its rollout is ongoing.
