Why South Korea Leads in AI Enthusiasm

South Korea has become one of the world’s most technologically advanced nations, where artificial intelligence is firmly embedded in daily life. In Seoul, smart public transport stops equipped with AI assistants—capable of answering passenger questions in multiple languages—are already being tested. Such initiatives are part of a broader strategy to integrate AI into infrastructure and services.

South Koreans’ optimism about AI starkly contrasts with sentiments in other countries. According to Pew Research Center studies, only 16% of South Koreans feel more concern than enthusiasm, compared to 50% in the U.S. Most Koreans use AI daily—from virtual assistants to workplace tools—supported by data from the Ministry of Culture and the Korea Chamber of Commerce.

The government actively promotes AI development, viewing it as a key driver of economic growth. President Lee Jae-myung has set a goal to position the country among the top three global AI leaders, alongside the U.S. and China. To achieve this, the National AI Strategy Council was established, projects for domestic AI model development were launched, and computing power acquisitions were prioritized. Special attention is given to the semiconductor sector: Samsung and SK Hynix supply the global market with AI chips, bolstering the nation’s economy.

South Korea’s legislation also accelerates AI development. In 2024, the AI Basic Act was passed, encouraging innovation with minimal regulatory constraints. According to the 2026 Stanford AI Index, 70% of Koreans prioritize advancing science and medicine through AI over protecting traditional industries via regulation.
