Semi-Solid-State Batteries: A Revolution in Portable Chargers

Lithium-ion batteries have been the backbone of portable electronics, including power banks, for decades. However, their limitations—fire risk, moderate energy density, and fast-charging issues—have driven the search for alternatives. Semi-solid-state batteries have emerged as a compromise, blending proven technologies with innovations.

Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries that use liquid electrolytes, semi-solid-state models employ a polymer or gel composition. This reduces fire risks and increases energy density to 300 Wh/kg or higher while maintaining compatibility with existing production lines, making them cost-effective.

The first commercial products based on semi-solid-state batteries are already available. For example, Singapore-based BMX’s SolidSafe lineup offers 5,000mAh and 10,000mAh power banks with Qi2 wireless charging support. These devices stand out for their compactness (just 6.8mm thick) and a starting price of $59, comparable to premium lithium-ion alternatives.

Experts note that semi-solid-state batteries could serve as an intermediate step before the widespread adoption of fully solid-state batteries. They demonstrate an improved charge cycle (up to 2,000 cycles before a 20% capacity drop) and support fast charging at over 2C. This enables the creation of thinner, lighter devices without sacrificing battery life.

The technology is already drawing attention from electronics manufacturers. It is expected that semi-solid-state batteries will soon appear not only in power banks but also in smartphones, laptops, and other gadgets where safety and energy efficiency are critical.
