Rhino Linux Tests Lomiri — The Return of Unity Desktop Concept

Developers of the Rhino Linux distribution have introduced a test build featuring the new Lomiri interface, which largely replicates the Unity desktop concept originally created by Canonical for Ubuntu. The project aims to revive the idea of convergence, enabling a single operating system to function across various devices, from desktops to smartphones.

In its current version, Lomiri is far from ready. During testing, critical issues were observed: applications spontaneously resized, and some interface elements were inaccessible. For instance, certain panels in LibreOffice Writer were missing, rendering the office suite unusable. Nevertheless, basic functions like system settings remained stable.

The Lomiri interface retains recognizable Unity features, including a side panel and a top menu bar. However, the app menu has been simplified, resembling a mobile App Drawer more than a traditional desktop solution. Developers have also incorporated mobile-specific elements, such as airplane mode and screen rotation lock, which appear redundant on PCs.

The project’s success hinges on whether developers can adapt Lomiri for modern mobile devices. Canonical previously failed with Unity due to a lack of hardware manufacturer support. If Rhino Linux secures backing from major vendors like Samsung or Google, the convergence concept could gain renewed momentum.
