Rivian to Start Deliveries of Electric SUV R2 on June 9

US electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has announced the exact start date for deliveries of its new SUV R2—June 9. Designed as a more affordable alternative to the flagship R1 lineup, the R2 marks a crucial step for the company toward achieving profitability. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe previously emphasized the strategic importance of the R2, calling it "possibly the most important product in the brand’s history."

The first batches of the R2 will be offered in a configuration priced just under $60,000. However, the company has already outlined plans to expand its lineup: a standard version priced at $48,490 is expected by 2027, and an even more budget-friendly model for $45,000 is slated for release by the end of 2025. These moves aim to attract mass-market consumers and accelerate production.

Rivian’s leadership has set ambitious targets: by the end of 2024, the company plans to deliver up to 25,000 R2 vehicles. The model is expected to serve as the foundation for the company’s path to self-sustainability—its first since its founding in 2009. In addition to the R2, Rivian’s lineup will include the R3 hatchback, also targeting the broader market.
