Samsung Unveils Futuristic Smartphone Concepts with Flexible and Expandable Displays

In a secret Samsung Display lab in South Korea, journalists were given a first look at smartphone concepts that could shape the future of mobile devices. Among the prototypes are screens capable of not only folding but also sliding, as well as hybrid solutions combining both technologies. These developments showcase Samsung’s experimentation with form factors to make smartphones more versatile.

One concept, the Flex S, unfolds into a Z-shape, offering users an expanded display for content consumption. Another prototype, the Out Foldable, features an unconventional design with screens on the exterior, allowing the device to unfold into a mini-tablet. However, this configuration raises concerns about display durability and protection from damage.

A standout innovation is the Flex Slidable—a smartphone with a horizontally expanding screen. While similar concepts were explored by LG and Motorola, their projects never reached mass production. Samsung also unveiled the Flex Hybrid, which merges folding and sliding to address the bulkiness of modern foldable devices.

Beyond flexible displays, the lab showcased screens with record-breaking brightness of up to 5000 nits and ultra-thin bezels measuring just 0.6mm. These technologies could dramatically improve outdoor readability and create a seamless display effect, though practical implementation will require addressing usability and accidental touch issues.

While the timeline for commercialization remains unclear, these concepts provide insight into the direction of the industry. Samsung continues to lead in foldable smartphone development, and these new prototypes may lay the groundwork for future models that redefine mobile technology.
