Sardinia vs. Green Transition: Lessons for IT and Energy Sectors

The Italian island of Sardinia has become a battleground between local residents and government plans to expand renewable energy. In 2024, about a quarter of the island's population signed a petition against new wind and solar power plants, even though Sardinia already exports around 30% of its generated electricity.

Emily Waltz, a journalist from IEEE Spectrum who visited the island, found that Sardinians do not deny the importance of the green transition but strongly oppose their region becoming a "giant battery" for continental Italy. The roots of this resistance run deep: for 2,700 years, Sardinia faced invasions and exploitation by Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, and other conquerors. Even after unification with Italy in 1861, the island retained autonomous status, and its residents maintained a wary attitude toward external initiatives.

Experts note that the key issue is the top-down approach, where decisions are made without considering local communities' opinions. Meanwhile, Sardinia already has over 50 "energy communities" where residents independently adopt renewable energy sources. Such a decentralized approach could serve as a model for other regions, including IT and telecommunications projects, where local specifics are equally critical.

The Sardinian experience demonstrates that ignoring historical context and local needs can undermine even the most ambitious technological initiatives. This lesson applies not only to energy but also to digital transformation, where project success often depends on end-user engagement.
