Sonos Play: Hybrid Speaker for Home and Outdoors with Convenient Control

Sonos has introduced the new Play speaker, marking its first major update to the brand’s audio lineup in over a year. Priced at $299, this hybrid device is designed for versatility, whether on a desk, in the kitchen, or during outdoor activities. Weighing 1.3 kg, it features a convenient carry handle and a docking station for stationary use.

The speaker boasts IP67 water resistance, making it safe for use in the rain or even brief underwater immersion. An added bonus is its built-in battery, which can charge a smartphone in emergencies. Sound is powered by two tweeters, a midrange driver, three digital amplifiers, and two passive radiators for enhanced bass outdoors. At moderate volumes, the audio is balanced with clear instrument separation, though high volumes compromise clarity.

Controls are managed via touch-sensitive buttons on the top panel, which blend seamlessly with the design and aren’t immediately noticeable. Built-in microphones enable automatic room calibration using Trueplay technology, eliminating the need for manual adjustments. However, the Sonos app still has flaws, such as unstable device switching and occasional sync delays with MacBook.

For those prioritizing stationary use, Sonos offers alternatives like the Era 100 or Era 100 SL, which are cheaper and more powerful. Yet, if mobility and versatility are key, Play is an excellent choice for both home and outdoor settings. Two speakers can be paired for stereo sound, enhancing music playback but not ideal for TV audio.
