SpaceX Acquires Cursor Startup for 4,4 трлн ₽ After Record IPO

SpaceX has finalized its acquisition of Cursor, an AI-driven startup specializing in automated programming tools. The deal, valued at 4,4 трлн ₽ in stock, is expected to close in Q3 2024. Cursor, founded in 2022 as Anysphere, went through the OpenAI accelerator and secured major funding rounds, including 65,2 млрд ₽ and 166,6 млрд ₽ in 2025.

The acquisition aligns with prior collaborations between the companies. SpaceX’s xAI division had previously hired key Cursor engineers and provided data center resources. However, financial constraints, including insufficient funds to achieve profitability, expedited the acquisition. Cursor had initially aimed to raise 144,9 млрд ₽ but failed to meet its targets.

For SpaceX, acquiring Cursor is part of a broader strategy to expand its AI initiatives, which the company views as critical to its long-term growth. Prior to its IPO, SpaceX projected the AI market potential at 1883,7 трлн ₽, encompassing infrastructure and enterprise solutions. Yet, xAI faced significant hurdles, including co-founder departures, ethical content scandals, and the need for restructuring.

The surge in SpaceX’s stock value post-IPO made the deal more advantageous, with the company’s market cap increasing by 72,4 трлн ₽ in days—equivalent to the combined value of 16 Cursor-like startups. SpaceX now expects Cursor’s technologies to help execute its ambitious AI plans and strengthen its market position.
