Supermicro Assists Taiwanese Authorities in Cracking Down on Server Smuggling to China

Supermicro issued an official statement confirming its cooperation with Taiwanese authorities in investigating the smuggling of servers to China. As a result of the operation, three individuals were detained, and 50 servers intended for illegal export were seized. According to the investigation, the equipment was purchased from an official reseller but later resold in violation of export restrictions.

Supermicro emphasized that the initial sale of the servers complied with all regulatory requirements, but subsequent resales fell outside the manufacturer's control. The company expressed its readiness to continue collaborating with authorities in the U.S., Taiwan, and other countries to prevent the illegal circulation of technologies. This incident is part of a series of investigations related to the smuggling of high-tech equipment into China.

Previously, Supermicro founder Charles Liang (Yi-Shian "Wally" Liao) was accused by U.S. prosecutors of organizing $2.5 billion worth of server smuggling. Despite this, the company itself is not named in the charges. The situation escalated following statements by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who urged Supermicro to strengthen export compliance controls. Supermicro's stock plunged after news of the U.S. investigation broke.

U.S. authorities are tightening measures to restrict the supply of advanced technologies to China, particularly in artificial intelligence. In March, the Trump administration proposed a strict licensing system for AI equipment exports. Some senators are advocating for a complete ban on Nvidia product shipments to China and several Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
