Telegram Files Application for .gram Top-Level Domain for Users

Telegram has applied for the registration of a new .gram top-level domain, as announced by founder Pavel Durov on his X account*. If approved, users could secure personalized addresses in the format username.gram, unlocking new possibilities for website creation and hosting.

The application was submitted to ICANN, the organization responsible for domain name distribution. However, approval is not guaranteed: the process includes technical and financial reviews, as well as periods for potential objections. If implemented, Telegram could enable users to create websites on their domains using text prompts, eliminating the need for complex configurations.

One key reason for the application is the recent issue with the t.me domain, which temporarily became inaccessible due to registrar actions. A proprietary top-level domain would allow Telegram to reduce dependence on external companies and enhance service stability. This is particularly vital for a platform frequently facing government-imposed restrictions.

With approximately one billion users, Telegram’s introduction of .gram domains could further expand the messenger’s functionality. Beyond messaging, the platform already supports bots, channels, and device management, and this new feature would add tools for web content creation.
