TikTok Tests Peer-to-Peer Payments via Direct Messages

TikTok is exploring the possibility of adding a peer-to-peer payment feature that allows users to send money through direct messages. According to a Bloomberg report, references to this option were found in the code of the U.S. iOS app, enabling transfers via the TikTok Pay system. This payment system is already used in Southeast Asia for purchases in TikTok Shop.

According to the source, recipients will be able to accept transfers with a single tap, while senders can accompany them with text messages, similar to Venmo’s functionality. TikTok representatives stated that the feature is not yet in testing, indicating an early development stage. Official launch timelines remain unknown.

This is not TikTok’s first attempt to expand its financial services. Earlier, Reuters reported that the company applied to Brazil’s Central Bank for a fintech license to offer loans and payment services. The social platform has long moved beyond entertainment content, adding features such as search, maps, hotel bookings, and gaming services.

If launched, TikTok’s P2P payments would intensify competition with other platforms offering similar services. For example, X* recently introduced X* Money for user-to-user transfers. The development of financial services is becoming a key focus for major social networks aiming to retain users within their ecosystems.
