Uber and Wayve Prepare to Launch Robotaxis in London: Competing with Waymo

Uber and UK-based startup Wayve are preparing to launch an autonomous taxi service in London. Users can now register on a waitlist to increase their chances of riding in a self-driving vehicle. While the exact launch date remains unannounced, the companies have confirmed the service will debut in the coming months, subject to regulatory approval.

The vehicles, based on the Ford Mustang Mach-E, are equipped with Wayve’s autonomous driving system. Uber’s team has designed the passenger interaction interface, including multilingual touchscreens. Initially, a safety operator will be present in the cabin, but the plan is to transition to fully driverless operation in the future.

Competition in London’s market is heating up: Waymo, owned by Alphabet, is already testing around 100 autonomous Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in the city. Notably, while Uber and Waymo collaborate in the U.S., their interests directly overlap in London. In February, Wayve secured $1.2 billion in investments, including funding from Uber, underscoring the company’s commitment to advancing autonomous technologies.

Regulatory hurdles remain a critical factor for service launches. The UK government has yet to finalize the regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles, which could delay the full-scale deployment of robotaxis. A pilot program for companies launched in May, with results set to inform future regulations.
