Uber and WeRide to Launch Spain’s First Commercial Robotaxi Service

WeRide and Uber have announced plans to launch Spain’s first commercial autonomous taxi service. The project will be implemented in Madrid with support from regional authorities and will become the twelfth city in WeRide’s global robotaxi network. The service is expected to launch in 2026, allowing users to hail vehicles through the Uber app*.

Initially, trained safety operators will be present in the vehicles, but the companies plan to transition to fully autonomous driving in the future. They aim to gradually expand the fleet to several hundred vehicles, covering key areas of Madrid. Local Uber partner AVOMO will handle operational management of the service.

The collaboration between WeRide and Uber in Europe opens new opportunities for autonomous transport development on the continent. The project also highlights the growing interest in integrating self-driving technologies into existing mobility platforms. Madrid will be the first city in the region where users can experience the benefits of robotic taxis in daily life.
