Waymo Leads in Autonomous Vehicle Registrations in Texas, Tesla Lags Behind

The Texas Department of Transportation has launched an online tool providing access to autonomous vehicle registration data in the state. According to this data, Waymo, owned by Alphabet, has registered 577 self-driving cars, significantly surpassing its competitors.

Avride ranks second with 317 vehicles, followed by Nuro (47) and Tesla (42). Tesla, which launched its robotaxi service in Austin last summer and expanded it to Dallas and Houston, lags noticeably behind the leader. Other market participants include MOIA, a Volkswagen subsidiary, which has registered 12 autonomous electric buses.

While fleet size does not always reflect a company’s actual activity, these numbers demonstrate Waymo’s dominance in the Texas market. The company began commercial operations of its robotaxis in Austin in March 2025 and has since expanded to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Meanwhile, some players, such as Nuro and Zoox, have yet to offer commercial services.

The tool also includes data on autonomous freight vehicles. Aurora leads in this category with 91 self-driving trucks, followed by Kodiak AI (33) and Waabi (13). Gatik AI, specializing in medium-duty trucks, has registered 64 vehicles.

This data will help track the dynamics of the autonomous transportation market in Texas, though it’s worth noting that not all registered vehicles are actively in use. For example, Waymo temporarily suspended operations in some cities due to challenges adapting vehicles to flood conditions.
