Waymo Launches China-Manufactured Ojai Robotaxis in the U.S.

Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, has announced the start of public trials for its new Ojai robotaxis. The vehicles, featuring a light-blue body, will begin transporting passengers in California and Arizona soon. This marks the first time the company has used China-manufactured vehicles for commercial rides in the U.S.

The Ojai model is designed with the latest advancements in autonomous driving and equipped with upgraded sensors and updated software. Waymo continues to aggressively expand its service footprint, aiming to strengthen its position in the robotaxi market, where competition with players like Cruise and Zoox is intensifying.

Interestingly, the choice of a Chinese manufacturer for assembling the new robotaxis may be driven by cost optimization and faster market entry. While Waymo has experience collaborating with various production partners, this move underscores the global nature of the modern autonomous transportation industry.

The launch of Ojai also reflects the company’s push to diversify its fleet. Previously, Waymo primarily used Jaguar I-Pace and Chrysler Pacifica vehicles but is now focusing on more flexible and cost-effective solutions.
